Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the engineering behavior of earth materials. We use principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics to investigate subsurface conditions and materials; determine the relevant physical/mechanical and chemical properties of these materials; evaluate stability of natural slopes and man-made soil deposits; assess risks posed by site conditions; design earthworks and structure foundations; and monitor site conditions, earthwork and foundation construction.

Geotechnical consultants are also a regulatory requirement during the development of real estate in the Bay Area.  Most local building departments generally require that we 1) prepare a geotechnical engineering report 2) review and approve geotechnical aspects of the project plans, and 3) observe construction of the project’s critical soil and foundation elements.
